A $1 billion hospital is coming to Northwest Cary

UNC Health is building a full hospital campus on Green Level Church Road near Hopson Road, on the corner where Northwest Cary meets southern Durham County. I live a few minutes away, and this is the biggest thing to happen to this side of town in years.

What's confirmed

The project, the UNC Hospitals Cary Campus, comes out of the settlement between UNC Health and Duke Health that ended a long certificate-of-need fight. The plans on file: 102 acute care beds and two operating rooms, with the hospital expected to open around January 1, 2032. Reporting from the Triangle Business Journal puts the full campus investment at about $1 billion.

That 2032 date doesn't mean the site sits quiet until then, either. Work is already moving on a large medical office building on the campus, which means clinics, doctors' offices, and jobs arrive well before the hospital itself opens its doors. Construction on the hospital itself is expected to begin in 2028, per the Journal's reporting.

Why this corner?

If you know this area, the choice makes sense. This pocket sits at the seam of three of the fastest-growing places in the Triangle: West Cary, Morrisville, and Research Triangle Park. Thousands of new rooftops have gone up around Green Level in the last decade, and the nearest full-service hospitals are a real drive away. A hospital here fills an obvious gap.

What it means if you own a home nearby

I'll be straight: nobody can promise what any single home will be worth in 2032. But here's what a billion-dollar hospital campus historically brings to a neighborhood like ours:

If you're thinking of selling in the next few years, this is a genuine part of your home's story, and I'd tell it. If you're buying out here, you're getting in ahead of an anchor institution. Either way, it's a good day to own a home in Northwest Cary.
